The Secret to a Successful Year Without Resolutions
Did you make New Year’s resolutions? Have you already abandoned them? You aren’t alone. In fact, studies show most people give up on their resolutions by mid-January. Why? Think about it. Deciding on Jan. 1 that you’re going to completely transform your diet, work out six days a week, and finally read those 52 books on your shelf is… a lot. The good news is that whether you forgot to set resolutions or have already given up, there’s a way to get back on track and achieve your goals for 2026.
Why Resolutions Fail
We tend to unknowingly set ourselves up for failure. We make grand statements without any idea how to get there. We focus on what we should do rather than what we genuinely want to do or what’s meaningful to us. We don’t have a clear reward in mind. And, let’s be honest, we just might not be ready to change. The thing is, we don’t need resolutions to make changes. We just need to change our mindset.
To Succeed Think Smaller
Break down your big aspirations into small, manageable goals. Want to improve your fitness? Start by committing to a 10-minute walk three times a week, then gradually increase the duration and intensity. Celebrate these small wins because they’ll build your confidence and create lasting habits.
Pick the Right Time
January 1 isn’t some magical date for change. If February, May, or October feels better for you, go with that! Choose a time when you’re genuinely ready to start working on your goals.
Be Specific
Instead of saying, “I want to eat healthier,” set a clear, actionable goal like, “I’ll cook dinner at home three nights a week.” The more specific you are, the easier it is to track progress. Eating locally is a great way to eat in season vegetables. Jubilee makes this easy by having a community supported agricultural (CSA) program where farm fresh produce is delivered to the community twice a week.
Be Realistic
Ambition is great, but not if it comes at the expense of your well-being. Goals should push you, not punish you. If a goal feels impossible or makes you miserable, you’re less likely to stick with it.
Change Your Surroundings
Make your environment work for you. Want to eat better? Stock your fridge with fresh, healthy options and put the snacks out of sight. Want to exercise more? Keep your workout gear visible and ready to go. Small adjustments to your surroundings can have a big impact.
Find Your Cheerleaders
Don’t keep your goals to yourself! Share them with friends, family, or a supportive community. When others know what you’re working toward, they can offer encouragement, accountability, and even join in on the journey with you.
Keep Trying
Progress isn’t always linear. You’ll have good days and bad days, but what matters is that you don’t stop. Even if you stumble, get back up and keep going.
