Have More Good Days Together

Have More Good Days Together

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to reflect on how we do and do not take care of ourselves. This year, the theme is More Good Days Together, an opportunity to reflect on what defines a good day for us and how we can use that knowledge to connect people to support and shape advocacy, education, and community engagement. How can you make more good days for yourself? Here are some tips:

Define What a Good Day Means for You

What constitutes a good day is different for everyone. For some it might mean getting that job promotion or a unique life event such as a wedding or birth of a child. For others it might mean just having a calm, manageable day. Remember that your definition of a “good” day can change over time. And if you aren’t having a good day? Remember that you are not alone. You can seek support to help you get back on track.

Take Care of Your Mind and Body

The mind and body are symbiotic. You have to take care of both. Not getting enough sleep, poor nutritional habits, and existing health conditions all play a part in how we feel about ourselves and how our bodies operate. While you can’t control everything in your life, how you take care of mind and body can lead to better days, whether it’s spending three days at the gym, staying hydrated, or getting a full eight hours of rest.

Find Your Path

How you feel about yourself is deeply personal. While others can offer advice, only you know what you need for your own mental health. Finding your path means finding what works for you. Sometimes that means finding ways to make more friends, sometimes you might need a little professional help. Honor what works for you. There may be some bumps along the way, but if you stick with it, your odds of having more good days increase.

Work Together

When our mental health is poor, we can feel very alone. The solution is to find your tribe. Find people who help you and support you as you strive to better your mental health. Even short amounts of time interacting with others can change our perceptions. And don’t forget to check in with friends and family — you never know what someone else is going through unless you ask. Make sure to listen and don’t judge.
